SILK

SILK is an Indo-Jazz fusion band, a rendition of Indian classical and western Jazz by an ensemble of a percussionist, singer, bassist, jazz, and mridangam expert.

The band derives its name from the names of its members, world-famous percussionist Sivamani, national award-winning multi-talented singer-composer Shankar Mahadevan, the Mridangam Mozart Sridhar Parthsarthy, the face of Indian jazz Louis Banks, and India’s bassist maestro Karl Peters.

Sivamani is a sought-after performer both for live shows as well as recordings. He is widely recognized for his ability to create music out of anything and is the only Indian drummer to receive the Padma Shri. Ustaad Zakir Hussain in a live show presented him as a ‘Phenomenon that walks the planet but once or twice in a century’.

Shankar Mahadevan, a renowned singer and music composer, is known for his very famous song Breathless. He is also a four-time National Award winner and a recipient of Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award.

Sridhar Parthsarthy, a mridangam and rhythm specialist, also plays the kanjira, ghatam, and bamboo flute, resulting in poetry in his rhythmic explorations.

Louis Banks, a music composer, jazz musician, keyboardist, and singer, is regarded as the ‘Godfather of Indian Jazz’. He has been a part of the orchestra to performed with sitar virtuoso Pandit Ravi Shankar and composed the tunes to the iconic Mile Sur Mera Tumhara in 1988.

With his mastery of the bass guitar, his wizardry in Jazz harmony and melodies and rhythmic influences, and his understanding of R+B, Funk, Blues, and Jazz Fusion Styles, Karl Peters is one of the best Bassists in India. He is one of the few in the world who plays the five-string bass guitar that normally has four strings and is the innovator of the fifth string to his guitar to increase the depth of the bass.
